Chatterbox

an expressive voice you can run locally

Runs on Mac, Windows, Linux. The lights below are for Chatterbox.

How good is it?

Closer to a performance than Kokoro. Still not a substitute for a directed studio voice.

This job is not on the July 2026 chat board, so the line above comes from the model card.

Home voices are clear. They are still less expressive than a top cloud voice studio when you want a performance.

Will it fit?

A green light means it fits and feels fine. Amber means it fits, with a wait or a tight memory pool. Red means the file is bigger than the room we count.

Running Chatterbox locally

A local voice can read your own writing for free, with no chapter quota.

  • The manuscript stays on your PC
  • You can re-render a chapter after an edit
  • No per-character bill

Where it falls short

  • The performance is flatter than a studio voice
  • You still master the files yourself

Cloud & apps

Voice studios and audiobook tools add emotion, casting and delivery formats.

Our take

Record a private draft locally. Use a studio voice if the audiobook is meant to be published and you can share the text.

Choose local if…

  • The book is unpublished
  • You will revise chapters

Choose cloud if…

  • The voice has to sound human
  • You are publishing

Will it run on my computer?

Pick the memory you have. A Mac counts 75% of unified memory. A graphics card counts 90% of its memory. A PC without a graphics card counts half of its RAM. The file we plan around is 2 GB.

Chatterbox fits. About 12 GB is free for this 2 GB file.
