Describe your computer

Pick the closest line. Office PC and Mini PC are estimates. Linux and a home server stay in the list. We guess the specs, then hide models that would not fit. The guess stays cautious.

Local or cloud: Digitize old family recipes?

Reviewed Oct 2026

Local AI

Family recipe cards are private, and local OCR is a good way to read them.

  • Handwritten cards stay in the house
  • olmOCR is aimed at messy pages
  • You can correct the text before anyone else sees it

Where it falls short

  • Stains and old handwriting still need a human pass
  • The file is text, not a recipe app

Cloud & apps

Recipe managers are where you will actually cook from, after the text exists.

Our take

Read the family card locally, then file the text in a recipe app if you want it on your phone.

Choose local if…

  • The card is a family paper
  • The handwriting is private

Choose cloud if…

  • You want a grocery list
  • You cook from your phone

How to do it in 3 steps

  1. Open the model page and pick any app under Runs in, for example LM Studio or olmOCR. Each app page links to that maker's own guide.
  2. Open the olmOCR 2 7B page and check the traffic light for a few kinds of computer.
  3. Follow that official guide. This site does not add its own install steps.

Questions

Does this upload my files?
The local tools on this page don't upload your files. The cloud options in the comparison do.
What does it cost?
Most options are free. A few apps are a one-time purchase, and a few models need a computer with more memory.
What if it will not fit?
Use Check my computer, or turn on the lighter memory filters. A red light on the model page means the file is too big.
