Local or cloud: Separate vocals from music?

Reviewed Oct 2026

Local AI

This site does not list a stem splitter yet. A general local chat or whisper model will not pull vocals out of a mix.

  • A true local splitter keeps the song on your disk
  • Whisper can still transcribe the vocal once it is isolated

Where it falls short

  • No Demucs-style tool is on our list yet
  • The closest models here only transcribe or speak

Cloud & apps

Ultimate Vocal Remover is a free desktop app that does this job on your computer. Cloud splitters are the one-click alternative.

Our take

Use Ultimate Vocal Remover or a stem website. The local AI models on this list do not separate vocals yet.

Choose local if…

  • You can install a desktop app
  • The recording must stay offline

Choose cloud if…

  • You want a website
  • You also want a phone mixer

How to do it in 3 steps

  1. Open the model page and pick any app under Runs in, for example MacWhisper or whisper.cpp. Each app page links to that maker's own guide.
  2. Open the Whisper small page and check the traffic light for a few kinds of computer.
  3. Follow that official guide. This site does not add its own install steps.

Questions

Does this upload my files?
The local tools on this page don't upload your files. The cloud options in the comparison do.
What does it cost?
Most options are free. A few apps are a one-time purchase, and a few models need a computer with more memory.
What if it will not fit?
Use Check my computer, or turn on the lighter memory filters. A red light on the model page means the file is too big.
